Description

The recorded ancestry, especially upper class ancestry, of a person or family
The tendency of DNA sequences that are close together on a chromosome
a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring
chromosome pairs (one from each parent) that are similar in length, gene position, and centromere location.
the cells used during sexual reproduction to produce a new individual organism or zygote
a chromosome that differs from an ordinary autosome in form, size, and behavior.
any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome.
having a single set of unpaired chromosomes.
Having two sets of chromosomes or double the haploid number of chromosomes in the germ cell
the process by which one diploid eukaryotic cell divides to generate four haploid cells often called gametes
a feature of an organism
a genetic cross between a homozygous recessive individual and a corresponding suspected heterozygote to determine the genotype of the latter.
he principles that govern heredity were discovered by a monk named Gregor Mendel in the 1860's. One of these principles
one of the possible forms of a gene
a particular gene that has identical alleles on both homologous chromosomes. It is referred to by two capital letters
if they are different from one another, they are
the set of genes in our DNA which is responsible for a particular trait
The physical appearance or biochemical characteristic of an organism as a result of the interaction of its genotype and the environment
An allele or a gene that is expressed in an organism's phenotype, masking the effect of the recessive allele or gene when presen
relating to or denoting heritable characteristics controlled by genes that are expressed in offspring only when inherited from both parents, i.e., when not masked by a dominant characteristic inherited from one parent.
a graphical representation of the possible genotypes of an offspring arising from a particular cross or breeding event
a breeding experiment between P generation (parental generation) organisms that differ in a single given trait
a breeding experiment between P generation (parental generation) organisms that differ in two traits
the alleles of two (or more) different genes get sorted into gametes independently of one another
used to measure the chances or likelihood of an event to occur,
the exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during meiosis
the tendency of DNA sequences that are close together on a chromosome to be inherited together during the meiosis phase of sexual reproduction
a person or other organism that has inherited a recessive allele for a genetic trait or mutation but usually does not display that trait or show symptoms of the disease
maternally inherited from carrier mothers or from an affected father.
a form of intermediate inheritance in which one allele for a specific trait is not completely expressed over its paired allele. This results in a third phenotype in which the expressed physical trait is a combination of the phenotypes of both alleles
a form of dominance wherein the alleles of a gene pair in a heterozygote are fully expressed
when there is wide variation in the trait.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crossword?

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.

Next to the crossword will be a series of questions or clues, which relate to the various rows or lines of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question in the same amount of letters as there are boxes in the related crossword row or line.

Some of the words will share letters, so will need to match up with each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.

Who is a crossword suitable for?

The fantastic thing about crosswords is, they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword for adults, or just a couple of words for younger children.

Crosswords can use any word you like, big or small, so there are literally countless combinations that you can create for templates. It is easy to customise the template to the age or learning level of your students.
