The invention of the telescope was an important step for modern astronomy. It helped observe stars and planets. Our Earth orbits the Sun, along with seven other planets that constitute the solar system. Many comets also orbit the Sun. The entire solar system is only a small part of the Milky Way galaxy.

What is a system? Anything that is organized and predictable is a system. The orbits of the planets and the position of the Sun are fixed – they do not change. We always know where the planets and Sun will be. This system is called solar because the planets are controlled by the Sun’s gravity.
A sun is any star around which planets revolve. A star goes through many stages in its life cycle. It starts life from a nebula, evolves into a protostar, then a main sequence star. Depending on its mass, it can then become a red giant or a red super giant.
The pull of gravity on the Earth and on the Moon is different. Earth is much larger than the moon. So, its mass is greater and the gravitational pull here is 9.8 m/s2. But on the Moon, the gravitational pull is only 1.6 m/s2. So, an object will weigh less on the Moon than it does on Earth.

The path of the spoon around you is called its orbit. Earth and the other planets in the solar system go around the Sun in fixed orbits.

Tides occur due to the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon. At spring tide, the Sun and the Moon are in a straight line with each other. During this time, Earth experiences the highest high tides and the lowest low tides. At neap tide, the Sun and the Moon are at a 90 degree angle with each other. During this time, tides have the smallest range.
