Even though California was considered a free state, Southern slave owners saw an opportunity during the Gold Rush of 1848 and brought their slaves into California. This angered the state’s government and therefore they greatly supported and supplied the Union throughout the war.
When an extreme abolitionist attacked proslavery men it outraged the South and furthered the violence and separation between North and South.
This man led a violent attempt to overthrow the slavery system by attacking an arsenal and then supplying the slaves with weapons to fight back against their owners. The raid excited the North and outraged the South.

What is a crossword?

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.
