Description

a single disturbance that moves through a medium from one point to the next point
a wave whose displacement has a periodic variation with time or distance, or both
the act or process of propagating, especially the process by which a disturbance, such as the motion of electromagnetic or sound waves, is transmitted through a medium such as air or water
the wavelength is the spatial period of a periodic wave—the distance over which the wave's shape repeats.
the displacement of a wave from zero
the point on a wave with the maximum value or upward displacement within a cycle
the lowest point on a wave
a stage or fraction in the cycle of an oscillation, such as the wave motion of light or sound waves
the number of waves that pass a fixed point in unit time
the time taken for one complete cycle of vibration to pass a given point
the net effect of the combination of two or more wave trains moving on intersecting or coincident paths
the interference of two or more waves of equal frequency and phase, resulting in their mutual reinforcement and producing a single amplitude equal to the sum of the amplitudes of the individual waves.
the interference of two waves of equal frequency and opposite phase, resulting in their cancellation where the negative displacement of one always coincides with the positive displacement of the other
the angle made by a reflected ray with a perpendicular to the reflecting surface.
measure of the extent to which a substance slows down light waves passing through it
the resultant of similar vector quantities at a point is a function of the sum of the individual quantities
a ray of light that is pointing towards and striking a surface.
the angle that a line (such as a ray of light) falling on a surface or interface makes with the normal drawn at the point of incidence
when a ray of light reflects off a surface, the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
a point along a standing wave where the wave has minimum amplitude
the region of maximum amplitude between two adjacent nodes in a standing wave
the refraction of light in any situation, regardless of what the two media are
a periodic motion that repeats itself in a regular cycle
the periodic and repeating fluctuations heard in the intensity of a sound when two sound waves of very similar frequencies interfere with one another
the bending of waves around obstacles or corners
the change in direction of a wave passing from one medium to another caused by its change in speed
the change in frequency or wavelength of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the wave source
the entire distribution of electromagnetic radiation according to frequency or wavelength
rays of light or similar radiation exhibit different properties in different directions
the return of light or sound waves from a surface
electromagnetic radiation of a single frequency
equivalent to the frequency of sound waves, which are any compression waves in a medium
the light that is reflected

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crossword?

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.

Next to the crossword will be a series of questions or clues, which relate to the various rows or lines of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question in the same amount of letters as there are boxes in the related crossword row or line.

Some of the words will share letters, so will need to match up with each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.

Who is a crossword suitable for?

The fantastic thing about crosswords is, they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword for adults, or just a couple of words for younger children.

Crosswords can use any word you like, big or small, so there are literally countless combinations that you can create for templates. It is easy to customise the template to the age or learning level of your students.

Are crosswords good for students?

Crosswords are a great exercise for students' problem solving and cognitive abilities. Not only do they need to solve a clue and think of the correct answer, but they also have to consider all of the other words in the crossword to make sure the words fit together.

Crosswords are great for building and using vocabulary.

If this is your first time using a crossword with your students, you could create a crossword FAQ template for them to give them the basic instructions.
