Description

heritable trait or behavior in organism that aids in survival in present environment
speciation when 1 species radiates out to form several other species
speciation that occurs via geographic separation
structure that's similar because of evolution in response to similar selection pressures resulting in convergent evolution, not similar because of descent from a common ancestor
magnification of genetic drift as a result of natural events or catastrophes
evolution that results in similar forms on different species
allopatric speciation that occurs when a few members of a species move to a new geographical area
evolution that results in different forms in 2 species with a common ancestor
magnification of genetic drift in a small population that migrates away from a large parent population carrying an unrepresentative set of alleles
flow of alleles in and out of a population due to the migration of individuals or gametes
all of the alleles carried by all of the individuals in the population
the effect of chance on a population's gene pool
structure that's similar because of descent from a common ancestor
broader scale of evolutionary changes seen over paleontological time
changes in population's genetic structure (allele frequency)
overarching evolutionary model that took shape by the 1940s and is generally accepted today
greater relative survival and reproduction of individuals in a population that have favorable heritable traits, leading to evolutionary change
study of how selective forces change allele frequencies in population over time
formation of new species
speciation that occurs in same geographic space
variety of alleles in a population
physical structure present in organism but has no apparent function and appears to be from functional structure in a distant ancestor
allopatric speciation that occurs when something in the environment separates organism of the same species into separate groups
Lamarck's theory where modifications caused by environment/ use or disuse of a structure could be inherited causing evolutionary change
movement of individuals of a population to a new location; in population genetics, movement of individuals and their alleles from 1 population to another, potentially changing allele frequencies in both old and new population

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crossword?

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.

Next to the crossword will be a series of questions or clues, which relate to the various rows or lines of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question in the same amount of letters as there are boxes in the related crossword row or line.

Some of the words will share letters, so will need to match up with each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.

Who is a crossword suitable for?

The fantastic thing about crosswords is, they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword for adults, or just a couple of words for younger children.

Crosswords can use any word you like, big or small, so there are literally countless combinations that you can create for templates. It is easy to customise the template to the age or learning level of your students.
