Description

Is a laboratory technique used to make multiple copies of a segment of DNA.
A genetic structure in a cell that can replicate independently of the chromosomes, typically a small circular DNA strand in the cytoplasm of a bacterium or protozoan.
Relating to or denoting an organism that contains genetic material into which DNA from an unrelated organism has been artificially introduced.
An organism or cell, or group of organisms or cells, produced asexually from one ancestor or stock, to which they are genetically identical.
The transplantation of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones in order to correct genetic disorders.
Is a collection of microscopic DNA spots attached to a solid surface.
The analysis of DNA from samples of body tissues or fluids, especially when conducted in order to identify individuals.
Scientific tests or techniques used in connection with the detection of crime.
Containing genetic material that has been artificially altered so as to produce a desired characteristic.
Any of the pairs of the hydrogen-bonded purine and pyrimidine bases that form the links between the sugar-phosphate backbones of nucleic acid molecules.
A compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acids.
A compound that occurs in guano and fish scales, and is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acids.
A compound found in living tissue as a constituent base of nucleic acids. It is paired with guanine in double-stranded DNA.
A compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acids. A pyrimidine derivative, it is paired with adenine in double-stranded DNA.

Is a type of enzyme that is responsible for forming new copies of DNA, in the form of nucleic acid molecules.
Are enzymes that bind and may even remodel nucleic acid or nucleic acid protein complexes.
Is an enzyme that synthesizes short RNA sequences called primers.
An enzyme that brings about ligation of DNA or another substance.
Ribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid present in all living cells. Its principal role is to act as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for controlling the synthesis of proteins, although in some viruses RNA rather than DNA carries the genetic information.
The form of RNA in which genetic information transcribed from DNA as a sequence of bases is transferred to a ribosome.
A molecular component of a ribosome, the cell's essential protein factory.
RNA consisting of folded molecules that transport amino acids from the cytoplasm of a cell to a ribosome.
Is the process by which the information in a strand of DNA is copied into a new molecule of messenger RNA.
An enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of an RNA strand from a DNA template.
A set of three adjacent nucleotides, also called triplet, in mRNA that base-pair with the corresponding anticodon of tRNA molecule that carries a particular amino acid, hence, specifying the type and sequence of amino acids for protein synthesis.
A sequence of three nucleotides forming a unit of genetic code in a transfer RNA molecule, corresponding to a complementary codon in messenger RNA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crossword?

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.

Next to the crossword will be a series of questions or clues, which relate to the various rows or lines of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question in the same amount of letters as there are boxes in the related crossword row or line.

Some of the words will share letters, so will need to match up with each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.

Who is a crossword suitable for?

The fantastic thing about crosswords is, they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword for adults, or just a couple of words for younger children.

Crosswords can use any word you like, big or small, so there are literally countless combinations that you can create for templates. It is easy to customise the template to the age or learning level of your students.
